93% Solar Eclipse Thatcher Pass
My painting was done on August 21, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. when the solar eclipse began at Swifts Bay. Everything took on an ethereal glow with a quietude that silenced even the seagulls. Two writers, Kim Norton and Migael Scherer created a lyrical intersection between art and poetry, just 50' away from where this was painted at my home overlooking Swifts' Bay to Thatcher Pass.
Here's both poems:
"Eclipse at Swifts Bay", Kim Norton
The heron watches
Gulls cry
Crows debate
Sparkling sunlight on water intensifies, dissipates Blue grey water deepens to navy on opposite shorelines
Ferry waves wash ashore in iridescent brilliance
Twilight Chill Complete stillness A new dawn warms
Heron once more feeds Gulls again cry Crows resume debate
And in the bay a lone skiff approaches a crab pot
"Eclipse at 93%", Migael Scherer
The bay was a-glitter and full of light When the heron fluffed its wings, bent its legs, And glided from its rock perch into the shallows.
The sun's glare dimmed, The air cooled, The pale blue sea greyed.
The heron looked down, step-stepping through the water, It speared a fish with its sharp beak, Flipped and swallowed the fish head first, Then gracefully re-curved its neck.
On the seaweed green beach gulls bowed there heads, Busily poking and pulling at the kelp, Searching for morsels in the muck.
Low tide, not the eclipse, was the main event this morning.
