Boom! Kilauea Eruption, 8:30 a.m. January 28, 2025

I have never had the opportunity to paint a live volcanic eruption. The odds of that ever happening again are astronomically high. I captured the whole scene with this painting done en plein air from the "steam Vents" lookout at the crater rim.

While the opportunity to paint this is quite rare, the two paintings I did that morning are without question, my best ever plein air masterworks.

This painting won "Best Plein Air Landscape" with 830 entries from 23 countries, in the January 2025 Salon Competition of Plein Air Magazine. Juror was Mark D. Mitchell, Executive Curator of Yale University Fine Art Gallery.
