Beach Walk, Port Stanley
2023
About this work
Painted from an alcove just above the beach at Port Stanley, about a half mile from the old houses that line this historic harbor. I was initially drawn to the fall colors on the 1st day of November.
Just as I set up to start the painting, a person toting a knapsack walked by just below me. Quite often, I think about the history of the people in a place like Lopez Island and felt instantly transported back to another time, when knapsacks were in - way before backpacks!
Port Stanley was a thriving community in the late 1800's even sporting a kelp harvesting mill that closed over 100 years ago! This person could have been an apparition from that era, as far as I was concerned, but left real footprints and wandered off into the distance at an even pace.
